Summary

"What's the point of having a voice if you're gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn't be?"

Sixteen-year-old Starr lives in two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised and her posh high school in the suburbs。 The uneasy balance between them is shattered when Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend, Khalil, by a police officer。 Now what Starr says could destroy her community。 It could also get her killed。

This book packs a punch。 It's centered around a black teenager who is shot and killed by a police officer。 It's a work of fiction but it's all too realistic。 The story is raw and painful but there's also humor and joy。 Thomas does a great job of giving the main character an authentic voice and the characters all feel like real, 3- dimensional people。 It isn't a light read but it's worth it。 This book packs a punch。 It's centered around a black teenager who is shot and killed by a police officer。 It's a work of fiction but it's all too realistic。 The story is raw and painful but there's also humor and joy。 Thomas does a great job of giving the main character an authentic voice and the characters all feel like real, 3- dimensional people。 It isn't a light read but it's worth it。 。。。more

I was really suprised that I enjoyed this book。 I asked for ideas from the High School Librarian and she mentioned this book。 This was right after the riots in Denver because of the man that was killed by the police officers in Minnesota, so I was worried it would be a downer and too political for me。。。 It was not。。。 It really shines a light on todays issues / concerns and also presents it in a way that you may not have thought about。 I would recommend it as a read!

Sometimes when you read a book, it sticks with you and never leaves。 This is one of those books。 I read this 337 page book in a day, which I’ve never done before for any book。 I couldn’t put it down。 But, it’s not for any suspense factor, or rising tension, or that the plot is incredible and full of plot twists。 This isn’t that kind of book。 This book is raw, powerful, and real。 This story is ‘fiction’, but it’s actually reality。 This happens too often to too many innocent people of colour whose Sometimes when you read a book, it sticks with you and never leaves。 This is one of those books。 I read this 337 page book in a day, which I’ve never done before for any book。 I couldn’t put it down。 But, it’s not for any suspense factor, or rising tension, or that the plot is incredible and full of plot twists。 This isn’t that kind of book。 This book is raw, powerful, and real。 This story is ‘fiction’, but it’s actually reality。 This happens too often to too many innocent people of colour whose lives mattered。 This book opened my eyes to so many things。 The obvious but also subtle racism that exists, the way the questions are asked, the way the past is dug up and used to justify, the way that the justice system fails。 The book is beautifully written, with Starr being a normal character with all her flaws, but finding her power and purpose。 She chose not to stay silent, and neither should we。Everyone should read this book。Khalil’s life mattered。Emmett’s life mattered。Tamir’s life mattered。Sandra’s life mattered。Breonna’s life mattered。Too many names to list are people whose lives mattered。Black lives matter。 。。。more

Personal Response: I think that The Hate You Give is a very good book with a good message。 The Hate You Give was super easy to read because it is so addicting。 I definitely had an urge to keep reading and see the rest of the plot because I relate to this book and made lots of connections with the main character。 If there is ever a follow-up part two to this book, I would love to read it。 Plot: An average, 16-year-old African American girl, Starr Carter is the main character in this book。 She li Personal Response: I think that The Hate You Give is a very good book with a good message。 The Hate You Give was super easy to read because it is so addicting。 I definitely had an urge to keep reading and see the rest of the plot because I relate to this book and made lots of connections with the main character。 If there is ever a follow-up part two to this book, I would love to read it。 Plot: An average, 16-year-old African American girl, Starr Carter is the main character in this book。 She lives in Garden Heights and is at a party with her best friend, Kenya。 They eventually split up and Starr runs into her old childhood friend Khalil, who enters the world of drug dealing and trouble。 They both left the party together while Khalil was driving he gets pulled over for a broken taillight。 The officer pats Khalil down and he walks away to ask Starr if she is okay, the officer fires his gun at him。 Khalil passes away and leaves Starr with lots of grief and anger。 Characterization: The Hate You Give is told through the first-person point of view from the perspective of Starr Carter。 Her character is the protagonist and shows the struggles of the aftermath of watching her friend get shot by a police officer for doing nothing wrong。 After going through lots of grief and anger, Starr wants to show people how all members of humanity should get treated equally regardless of wrongful perceptions of others。 Starr is a very static character throughout the book from keeping the same thought of her situation and her way of life。 In The Hate You Give, Khalil Harris plays a big part in Starr’s life from being her childhood best friend。 After his death, rumors spread that he dealt drugs and participated in gang activities, putting his death not important to many people。 Starr continues to fight for him and show that all members of humanity should be treated equally regardless of wrongful perceptions of others。 Khalil can be considered a dynamic character from when he and Starr were best friends when they were little compared to their teenage years。 Khalil changes the way he acts and how he treats everyone around him。 Setting: The Hate You Give takes place in the Garden Heights neighborhood in the southern part of the United States。 The setting is important to the storyline because of the way society uses stereotypes of black people to justify violence and racism against them。 The setting in this story affects the plot of this story because many people in Starr’s neighborhood believe that Khalil was a drug dealer and does not deserve their respect anymore just because he is African American。 Recommendation: I would recommend The Hate You Give to both female and male teenagers because I think they would relate to a lot of content in this book and enjoy it more。 I think that this book is a great way for people to learn more about equality and educate themselves on how to treat people respectfully。 I think that The Hate You Give would attract teenagers or middle-aged people。 This book is not a hard read but is still very interesting with a good meaning behind it。 。。。more

should be made a must read for anyone anywhere! Not only does it tackle hard issue in an accessible manner, but it has never been so prominent。

How have I not written a review for this incredible book? What can I even say? The Hate U Give is heartbreaking and yet so realistic。 Starr struggles with where she fits in。 Does she fit in within Garden Heights where there is a lot of crime, drug dealers, gangbangers but where she grew up and has roots? Does she fit in within her private school where she is only one of 4 black students, where she watches how she speaks and isn't necessarily herself? I finished Concrete Angel and had to re-read The Hate U Give to remember what happened to Maverick and King after Concrete Angel finished。 The relationship between Maverick and King is complicated。 Life in Garden Heights is complicated。 But at the end of the day, you don't deserve to be killed by police。 It doesn't matter if you are a drug dealer, gang banger, or anything else。 。。。more

Beautiful and raw。 This book left me in tears and frustration, and it hurts even more to think of how this could happen any day and happens so many times。 All the love for Angie Thomas。 This is such an important book, and I loved the development of Starr so much。 It portrays many struggles black people go through all the time and for me that was very enlightening and I wished for all of the characters to get their happy ending。

This should be mandatory reading everywhere instead of the same old, dusty books no one cares about。

I didn't like this book。 I mean there's nothing to like about it。 Like seriously there's no story。 In part 1 some things happen and after that it only describes the normal life of the protagonist and the feelings of her。 That's it。 I am seriously disappointed with this book。 And for the record it's immensely overrated。 I didn't like this book。 I mean there's nothing to like about it。 Like seriously there's no story。 In part 1 some things happen and after that it only describes the normal life of the protagonist and the feelings of her。 That's it。 I am seriously disappointed with this book。 And for the record it's immensely overrated。 。。。more

I read this way back in 8th grade and the book was absolutely amazing。 I wasn’t even a reader at the time and I loved it and enjoyed it way more than the movie。

This book will ignite a fire within you。 Though this is a fictional story, it is a true reflection of what many people have experienced。 It has a clear writing style, that is a good reflection of the thought process of a young main character like Starr。

This is my second time reading The Hate U Give。Angie, thank you for telling this story! I had to stop and breathe every so often, and let some tears fall。 I know this is more than just a story and I think that's why it makes me so emotional and angry, too。It's also reassuring, and convinces me to keep fighting even when it seems hopeless。 This is my second time reading The Hate U Give。Angie, thank you for telling this story! I am so glad that I read this book。 The content was pretty heavy, but important。 This is a story and perspective that needs to be told。 My eyes were really opened and I learned a lot more about race in America。 I had a really hard time putting this book down, which doesn't happen to me very often。 This is easily the best book I've read in 2021。 I also was nearly brought to tears multiple times while reading this book, which also doesn't happen to me very often。 I'd say this is a pretty amazing b I am so glad that I read this book。 The content was pretty heavy, but important。 This is a story and perspective that needs to be told。 My eyes were really opened and I learned a lot more about race in America。 I had a really hard time putting this book down, which doesn't happen to me very often。 This is easily the best book I've read in 2021。 I also was nearly brought to tears multiple times while reading this book, which also doesn't happen to me very often。 I'd say this is a pretty amazing book and if you haven't read it yet, well, what are you waiting for? I especially think that people who don't want to read this book because "the problems black people have are their own fault" are the ones who should read this book。 I think it explains the situation that underprivileged areas face and it might help some of the more privileged people understand why others are nearly trapped in their situations。 How their options are limited。 People of privilege often fail to realize that all these opportunities that they think others should take advantage of aren't even available to those individuals living in poverty。 That "opportunity" is not equal for every person。 So if you think you might be a person of privilege, this book is for you! Even though it's a work of fiction, there is a lot to be learned on the pages of this book。 。。。more

Having been recommended this book several times and also being aware of the attention this book had attracted when it was published, I read The Hate U Give with some level of expectation。 It may have been the anticipation that gave me a sense of disappointment after finishing the book, but speaking with total honesty, I would say the book may be slightly overrated。 The book centers around the topic of racism within the American police system。 The book does an excelling job of portraying reality Having been recommended this book several times and also being aware of the attention this book had attracted when it was published, I read The Hate U Give with some level of expectation。 It may have been the anticipation that gave me a sense of disappointment after finishing the book, but speaking with total honesty, I would say the book may be slightly overrated。 The book centers around the topic of racism within the American police system。 The book does an excelling job of portraying reality through fiction。 Racism is portrayed realistically with a good balance, and the author is careful not to convey a biased view of racism。 While the portrayal of the overall topic of the book was pretty good, I have to say the book was lacking in several places。 I felt the characters weren't as realistic, especially the main character, which made it difficult to relate to them, decreasing the overall entertainment of the story。 I also felt some developments of the plot felt forced and unnecessary, and only served the purpose to develop on the topic of the story, but not the actual plot。 This made the story feel a little forced。 But overall, the book would deserve a solid 3 stars, as it did a decently good job of portraying the topic of racism, despite some minor flaws。 。。。more
